In the spirit of unity, sustainability, and sport, countries from across Southern Africa are turning over a new leaf, quite literally.

Ahead of the Region 5 Youth Games, a major tree-planting campaign was launched right here in Namibia, with a powerful message: protect the planet, empower the youth.

At the After School Centre's Greys Block, Region 5 member countries officially launched a regional tree-planting initiative aimed at planting 25 million fruit-bearing trees across Southern Africa.

The campaign supports international climate goals, including the Paris Agreement and COP28, and encourages each country to plant at least 2.5 million trees.

Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Sanet Steenkamp, led the proceedings, highlighting the role of young athletes and schools in shaping a greener future.

The President of the Namibia National Olympic Committee, Dr Ndeulipula Hamutumwa, also addressed the crowd, praising the athletes for stepping up beyond the field of play.

With representatives from all 10 Region 5 countries present, the ceremony set the tone for sustainable games and a united call for climate action.
