Twenty people have been arrested in the Omaheke Region since the start of this year for drug abuse.
Speaking at the Commemoration of the Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at Gobabis, Omaheke Governor Pijoo Nganate pointed out that drug abuse and illicit trafficking have become systematic challenges.
Nganate emphasised the importance of guardians and church leaders playing a pivotal role in addressing drug use among youth.
"The vulnerability of our youth is our youth that is at stake; therefore, we face a critical imperative. This is not merely about law enforcement or health care; it is about safeguarding our future, nurturing human capital, and fostering a resilient community."
A chief social worker in the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Chaka Kabende, stressed that there is an urgent need for awareness programmes on various platforms that cater to young people.
"Prevention is the most effective effort, but it is also the foundation upon which we can break the cycle of addiction and criminal activities that normally trap our vulnerable people. The theme calls for a firm stance against the organised crimes that are more linked to the drug threat."
A medical officer at Gobabis District Hospital, Dr. Katjiuapeua Murangi, explains the negative effects of drug use.
The day was held under the theme Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery for All.
