Integrating arts such as choir singing into schools aligns with Namibia's Sixth National Development Plan.
The Ohangwena Education Director, Isak Hamatwi, said this at the Annual Regional Choir Competition held at Mwadikange Kaulinge Secondary School in the Ondobe Circuit.
The Education Directorate organised an Annual Regional Choir Competition, where 11 school choirs took part.
Ponhofi Senior Secondary School emerged as the overall winner.
In a speech read on his behalf, Hamatwi emphasised that choir competition is a way of cultivating the creative spirit that contributes to Namibia's creative industry.
“Music is not only an art form; it is a language of unity, healing, and expression. Through choir singing, we instil discipline and teamwork; you cannot work or sing if you are not a team. In addition, it nurtures confidence, strengthens identity, and builds the cultural foundation on which our society stands.”
He added that the Directorate Song is a unifying anthem for schools and the education community which, when sung in schools, can cultivate a sense of pride and belonging, motivate learners to achieve more, and remind educators of their noble role in shaping future generations.
The choir conductor of Ponhofi Secondary School, Jairus Abraham, commended the Directorate for the initiative, highlighting that singing improves learners' skills and trains them to recognise their talents.
This is the second edition of the competition, and the overall winner scooped a floating trophy and a cash prize of N$3,000.
