Dozens of vehicles took to the streets of Windhoek on Saturday in a show of solidarity with the people of Cuba. 

The Caravan for Solidarity and Cuba-Namibia Friendship, organised by the Namibia-Cuba Friendship Association and the Cuban Embassy, condemned the long-standing U.S. economic blockade on Cuba and celebrated the historic ties between the two nations.

The U.S. imposed the embargo on Cuba in the 1960s after Fidel Castro took power and seized American-owned businesses without compensation. 

The U.S. says it's sticking to its guns due to Cuba's one-party rule and limits on freedoms, still 63 years later. 

Locals showed their support for Cuba through the Caravan for Solidarity and Cuba-Namibia Friendship, filling Windhoek's streets with chants of "Viva Cuba, Viva!"

The car caravan drove through Windhoek's main streets before concluding with a commemorative gathering. 

City Centre dwellers lined the city centre, cheering and waving as the convoy passed by.

The Ambassador of Venezuela, Magaly Josefina Henríquez González, also joined in.

Cuba's Ambassador to Namibia, Sergio Vigoa de la Uz, also thanked Namibians and supporters abroad for their solidarity.

"It's a voice against the blockade, against putting Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terrorists. I would like to thank them in the name of the Cuban people for this public show of love that Namibia feels for the Cuban people. Then we are very excited because of this caravan. It was a big demonstration of the strong solidarity we have between the two countries."

The Namibia-Cuba Friendship Association also added its voice of support, saying, "The embargo against Cuba is a harmful and unjust measure that unjustly restricted the free flow of goods, services, and opportunity, ultimately harming innocent Cuban people and impeding its societal progress. Such sanctions worsened the economic hardship, deepened inequality, and undermined diplomatic efforts instead of fostering a constructive dialogue and resolution."

Rafael Ramirez is the president of the Cuban Residents Association in Namibia, who added, "We Cubans demand the lifting of the unjustifiable blockades against our country. Allow us to decide the future we want to live in sovereignty."

The Caravan for Solidarity is part of a broader global campaign condemning the U.S. embargo and calling for respect for Cuba's independence.
