The Ondonga Traditional Authority says it will work closely with the government and relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is pursued and that effective measures are put in place to protect all Community Court Justices and Traditional Leaders.
The commitment comes after the Headman of Iikokola Village, I-Ben Nashandi, and the Headman of Onelago Village, Sam Nepando, were shot during a session at Iikokola yesterday in Oshikoto when a known party to the dispute opened fire.
Nashandi sustained injuries, while Nepando died.
The Ondonga Traditional Authority's Omukwaniilwa, Nangolo Shuumbwa, condemned what he termed heinous acts of violence against traditional leaders who voluntarily serve their communities to hear disputes, uphold custom, and maintain peace and order.
He stressed that community courts are a cornerstone of the customary justice system and are institutions grounded in traditions and values, preserved and practised over centuries, and they exist to promote harmony, accountability and social cohesion.
The authority called upon communities to remain calm, united, and committed to peace, dialogue, and the rule of law.
