The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation's (nbc) Director General has described the recent attack on the corporation's news crew as a threat to media freedom, the safety of journalists, and the public's constitutional right to access information.
Stanley Similo condemned the verbal abuse, harassment and intimidation by the Former Refugee Repatriation Association Namibia.
Similo stressed that nbc journalists are professionals mandated to serve the Namibian people and must be able to do so without fear, threats or obstruction.
He says any attack on NBC journalists is an attack on the institution itself and on the fundamental democratic values enshrined in the Constitution.
Therefore, NBC will not hesitate to defend and stand firmly behind its employees who are targeted simply for doing their jobs.
The Director-General made it clear that the corporation has zero tolerance for intimidation, abuse or violence against its staff and will pursue all appropriate avenues to ensure the safety, dignity and protection of its journalists.
He added that attempts to silence, threaten or humiliate journalists who are servants of the public will not deter the corporation from fulfilling its public service mandate.
Similo called on political organisations, pressure groups and members of the public to respect the role of the media and to engage with journalists through lawful, peaceful and constructive means.
The Director-General expressed full solidarity with the affected news crew and all NBC employees working under increasingly challenging conditions, reaffirming nbc's unwavering commitment to independent, ethical and fearless journalism.
