The Namibia Correctional Services have said that the oldest inmate in custody is 77 years old and is serving a 14-year sentence for murder, while the average age of inmates at the facility is between 29 and 38, according to figures provided by the authorities.

The authorities said there are 29 inmates serving life sentences.

In terms of sentence lengths, 286 inmates are serving sentences of five years and more, while 415 inmates are serving sentences of less than one month.

A further 110 inmates are serving sentences of between one year and eight months and two years and six months.

The authorities also reported that 58 inmates were found to have been mentally incapacitated at the time the offence was committed.

Figures on the most prevalent crimes that brought offenders to the Correcttional Facility show that 337 inmates are incarcerated for murder, while 304 are serving sentences for rape.

The total inmate population housed Windhoek Correctional Facility stands at 1 1 86.

Assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm accounts for 115 inmates, while housebreaking accounts for 134 inmates.

The authorities said case management at the facility includes strengthening family ties, referrals to rehabilitative interventions, and the security reclassification of offenders.

The Namibia Correctional Services is hosting an Angolan delegation who are in the country to verify the nationality of Angolan nationals incarcerated in Namibia and want to serve the remainder of their sentence in Angola.
