Lüderitz residents' under the banner of !Nami#Nus Constituency Youth Forum staged a protest march, demanding stringent action against rampant drug menace, plaguing the southern coastal town.

Clad in the black attires displaying 'Say no to drugs,' and shouting 'Enough is enough,' the protestors marched to the local police station to hand over a petition condemning drug abuse.

They also demanded justice for 74-year-old Frieda Ngwedha, who was hit with an unknown object on her head during a robbing incident in December last year while walking home from a local shop.

No arrest has been made yet in connection with the murder.

Spokesperson of the group, Ndeshipanda Akwenye, explained.

“We want justice for Kuku Kauna. This tragic incident reflects the growing violence linked to drug abuse and addiction. Innocent civilians are increasingly becoming victims of attacks committed by individuals seeking to sustain drug habits. We call for a thorough investigation, transparency from law enforcement, and swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible. Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done.”

The protesters furthermore demanded strict enforcement of age restrictions in bars to protect minors, accountability for landlords renting premises to drug dealers, closure of abandoned buildings, and a police check at the town's entry point.

“We respectfully hand over this memorandum and request a written response within a reasonable time frame. As youth leaders, we stand not only for today's voices but also for generations to come. We refuse to be defined by drugs and crime. We choose hope, unity, and a future where every young person in Lüderitz can live, dream, and succeed in safety,” Akwenye added.

The Police Unit Commander for Crime Prevention Police, Paulus Kaferandu, received the petition.

“Most of the points that have aired, they are very of concern—concern for the community and concern for us as police officers. We will study the document thoroughly, and I can assure you will get a response as soon as possible. If it is possible within 14 days, we are likely to respond to you.”

Kaferandu urged the protesters to work closely with the police in fighting crime.
