The National Assembly has suspended its business for the day in light of the death of Swapo Party MP James Uerikua.

Uerikua died in a car accident last Friday.

Speaker of the National Assembly Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila informed the parliamentarians that the Prime Minister is expected to table a motion on Thursday to formally place on record the House's regret and convey its sympathies.

The late Uerikua also held the position of Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on International Relations, Defence and Security. He served as the governor of the Otjozondjupa Region and undertook various roles throughout his career as a civil servant.

Extending condolences, the Speaker said the thoughts and prayers of the House were with the bereaved family and the nation at large. 

"In accordance with Standing Order 137(1a) of the Standing Rules, Orders, and Internal Arrangements of the National Assembly, it is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the tragic passing of the Honourable James Unamasa Veriqua, a dedicated Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on International Relations, Defence, and Security."

Funeral arrangements, the House was told, would be announced in due course.

Members of Parliament observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Uerikua and his son, Venturo.

Following consultations among Chief Whips of all political parties, it was agreed that parliamentary business for the day would be suspended in light of the loss.

The House will reconvene on Wednesday at 14:30, when President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah delivers the State of the Nation Address.  

Proceedings will then continue as planned, including deliberations on the Appropriation Bill at the committee stage.
