The Okakarara community, led by local pastors, erected a white cross at the spot where former Otjozondjupa Governor James Uerikua lost his life in a car accident earlier this month.

Explaining the significance of the act, Okakarara Town Council’s Chief Executive Officer Ehrnst Katjiku said the placing of a cross is a common practice meant to mark the exact place where a life was lost, offering a space for remembrance, prayer, and reflection.

He added that it also serves as a reminder to the public about the fragility of life.

Katjiku further noted that the cross is temporary, as consultations are underway to erect a permanent structure at the same spot.

Community members lit candles and offered prayers at the accident site.

The gathering then proceeded to Okakarara, where the candlelight vigil continued, with speakers paying tribute to Uerikua’s leadership and the close bond he shared with his son.

Uerikua died instantly at the scene of the crash on 3 April, while his son, Venturo, who was travelling with him, later died from his injuries at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital.
