After years of waiting, residents at the Mix settlement in the Windhoek Rural Constituency are set to receive reliable energy access.
City officials say the electrification project at the settlement will restore dignity and spark a new local economy.
Windhoek mayor Sakarias Uunona agrees that electricity is a fundamental enabler of dignity, rather than a mere luxury.
Uunona announced that the rollout aims to benefit 275 households in the Windhoek Rural Constituency.
He further commended the residents for their patience during the planning phase.
"This electrification project is not merely a symbolic act, but it represents hope, progress and our collective commitment to improve the quality of life of our people. Electricity is more than just infrastructure; it is an enabler of dignity, safety and opportunity."
Julia Ndango, a community member at the Mix Settlement, expressed her gratitude to the City of Windhoek for bringing power to the area.
She believes the introduction of lighting will be a turning point for public safety.
"It has been a long-held promise, and now it has finally been fulfilled. We sincerely thank you for coming to us and bringing light to our area. For a long time, we lived in darkness, which led to a rise in crime. We were hesitant to venture out, but now, with electricity, we can sit in the light, knowing there is safety nearby. We are truly happy to be in Mix Settlement. After many years, we finally have electricity, and we are very proud."
The infrastructure work is already underway, with utility poles being erected across the settlement.
The over N$10 million project includes the installation of prepaid meters in every home and the addition of streetlights.
