Chairperson of the Luderitz Waterfront Development company, Angel Tordesillas, paid a courtesy visit to the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC).
During the visit, he reflected on Luderitz's transformation over the decades and the role of the media in documenting its history.
Describing the Southern town as the mother city of Namibia, the 87-year-old Tordesillas recalled the publication of the town's first newspaper as one of the milestones that marked the beginning of many developments in Luderitz.
“The first thing the first airline, the first stock exchange, the first X-ray machine, the first newspaper—all these things happened in Lüderitz, and I think we must bring the town to greater prominence. At the time of independence, and for two years afterwards, there was not even a mayor in Lüderitz. So, to pass a plan or build even a small structure, we had to come to the Peri-Urban Board here in Windhoek.”
LWDC Chief Executive Officer Fluksman Samuehl highlighted the chairperson's visit to NBC.
“We have to address with urgency the issues of employment creation in terms of what the state of enterprises can do, including the NBC.”
He also said the board will carefully study the marching orders issued by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and develop an implementation plan aligned with the government's national priorities.
“Our executive committee will carefully analyze the matching orders and develop an action plan. I think that, during the next engagement, we will be able to tell His Excellency that, collectively, the state-owned enterprises have created a significant number of jobs by the time of that engagement. We will also be able to report on the other projects that are currently underway and explain what they seek to achieve.”
NBC Director General Menesia Muinjo expressed appreciation for Tordesillas' visit, describing it as a reflection of the longstanding relations with Namibia and the LWDC.
“I also had the pleasure of learning from you when I was a young journalist. As you heard, he was always part of the leadership of the Founding President. For example, when we went to Spain to discuss plans for building the factories in Lüderitz, I had the opportunity to witness his interest, enthusiasm, and love for Namibia. Even today, at his age, he continues to dedicate his energy and resources to making Namibia the country we all want to see.”
She reaffirmed NBC's commitment to showcasing development initiatives that contribute to Namibia's socio-economic growth.
