Flood waters from southern Angola entered the Engela Constituency of the Ohangwena Region.

Residents living in flood-prone areas in the Ohangwena Region have been urged to be vigilant of the dangers that flood waters pose.

It was reported that the Cunene Province of southern Angola continues to receive good rainfall, leaving many areas submerged.

The water flooded into the flood streams toward the Angola-Namibia border, filling up the floodplains such as the Oshana shaNalumono stream.

This morning, communities in Oimbadalunga and Eeshoke villages in Engela and Ongenga Constituencies of the Ohangwena Region woke up to a surprise as flood waters were already in their areas.

Engela Constituency Councillor Elkan Hainghumbi, who rushed to the border to witness the situation, warned communities not to go into the flood waters as it pose serious health risks.

According to him, floodwater may carry waterborne diseases such as cholera and others.

"Communities must be vigilant at all times. In the morning when I was here, the water was not here, which means that they are flooding at a fast speed and can cause danger to humans and animals."

Hainghumbi warned communal farmers to also take care of their animals.

He also urged school-going children, their parents, and teachers to be on alert for this phenomenon.

"Parents need to be on the lookout for school-going children because these waters are deep and fast. Those who own animals should be warned to keep them away from oshanas to avoid losing them to flooding."

By Friday afternoon, the water was observed filling up the Oshana-ShaEngela plain as it passed Oimbadalunga village.

No lives were lost, nor was any damage to properties reported as a result of the flood as of yet.
