The National Assembly has welcomed US President Joe Biden's administration's announcement to remove Cuba from the United States Department of State's list of countries alleged to sponsor terrorism.
The Speaker of National Assembly, Professor Peter Katjavivi, issued a statement expressing support for the decision. He described it as a significant milestone in efforts to normalise diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States.
Parliament had previously addressed the issue during a session in April 2024, where lawmakers unanimously adopted a resolution that urged the United States to reconsider Cuba’s designation. The resolution also spoke to the importance of constructive diplomacy, as well as international collaboration to tackle shared global challenges such as terrorism, climate change, and regional security.
The National Assembly reiterated its unwavering support for the Cuban Revolution and hailed that country’s achievements in sovereignty, education, and healthcare. Namibia also called for the total removal of the economic blockade imposed on Cuba, urging nations to unite in the pursuit of peace, prosperity, and global solidarity.
