President Hage Geingob has described Hilde Kapitaholo Amunyela Shimweetheleni, a veteran of the liberation struggle, as a fearless woman and unwavering revolutionary.
The late Shimwetheleni was buried at the Omungulu-gwombashe memorial site in the Omusati Region.
89-year-old Shimwetheleni was born in August 1933 at Oshipya village in the Oshana Region.
She was introduced to politics at the age of 32 by her late brother, Sackaria Daniel, who was a political activist together with the late Nathanael Maxwilili.
Shimwetheleni provided shelter to Swapo fighters, and this resulted in her being periodically detained, tortured, and becoming a wanted freedom fighter.
In his message of condolences delivered on his behalf by Vice President Nangolo Mbumba, President Geingob hailed Shimwetheleni as a pioneer veteran and freedom fighter whose life was characterized by patriotism, sacrifice, and commitment to the liberation of Namibia.
"Indeed, comrade Hilde was one of those women who were rocks in the fight against apartheid aggression. No matter what the enemy did, no matter how brutal the intimidation, she remained steadfast to the end."
Founding President Sam Nujoma also sent a message of condolence to the family of the late Shimwetheleni.
"Her bravery, resilience, and commitment to the liberation struggle made an immense contribution to the attainment of our freedom and genuine independence in 1990."
