International Festival of Freedom of Expression and Press underway

The 10th edition of the International Festival of Freedom of Expression and the Press started in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The Pan-African meeting will move into higher gear with the official opening expected tomorrow.

As part of its main mission to promote and defend freedom of expression and the media, the festival will pay special tribute to Namibia for its consistent number-one ranking in Africa in terms of media freedom.

Namibia condemns ongoing violence between Israel and Hamas

The Executive Director of the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Ambassador Penda Naanda, has issued a statement in which Namibia expresses concern and subsequently condemns the ongoing escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.


The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is one that is long-running.

Hamas is fighting for the attainment of sovereignty for the Palestinian people, while Israel has been extending its borders into Gaza, a territory that forms part of Palestine.

Malaysia celebrates Independence Day

The Southeast Asian nation of Malaysia celebrated its Independence Day on Thursday. 

The National Day was marked with a ceremony at the Malaysian High Commission in Windhoek.

Malaysia's flag as an independent and sovereign republic was raised for the first time 66 years ago, on August 31st, 1957. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength, growing to become what was referred to as an Asian tiger.  

Zimbabwe opposition opposes voting extension

The decision to extend voting in selected wards by a day after the late distribution of ballot papers, which resulted in delayed polling, has not been well received by the opposition in Zimbabwe.

President Emerson Mnangagwa issued a presidential proclamation on Wednesday directing that the affected polling stations operate for an additional 24 hours.

It was a smooth opening at some polling stations on Wednesday, with the majority of those visited by the nbc opening on time.

Cuban Embassy celebrates Fidel Castro

The Cuban Embassy in Namibia celebrated the birthday of Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro at the Fidel Castro Ruz Primary School in Windhoek.

The event was also meant to celebrate the relationship between Namibia and Cuba as well as recognise the role that Cuba played during the country's liberation struggle for independence.

The Cuban Ambassador, Sergio Vigao de la Uz, talked to the learners about the perseverance of Fidel Castro Ruz as a way to inspire them.

President Xi JinpinG wishes President Hage Geingob Happy birthday

China is ready to work with Namibia to ensure that the comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership between the two countries grows in depth.

This was said by China's President Xi Jinping in his message to President Hage Geingob as he celebrated his birthday.

In his letter of birthday wishes to Dr. Geingob, President Xi says he attaches great importance to the relationship between Namibia and China.

Namibia, Russia cooperation excellent - Nangolo Mbumba

Vice President Nangolo Mbumba has described the relationship between Namibia and Russia as excellent.

During the Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg, Mbumba was interviewed on the Russian state news channel RT, where he said that Namibia will never turn its back on Russia, as Moscow was the only one who stood beside the country in its darkest times.

Mbumba says that Russia played a pivotal role in Namibia's independence, dedicating itself to protecting the Namibians and affording training in various areas.

Russia, African countries reaffirm need to jointly oppose neo-colonialism

Russia and African countries, including Namibia, have reaffirmed the need to jointly oppose neo-colonialism, the imposing of conditions, and double standards.

This forms part of the second declaration adopted at the just-ended second Russia-Africa Economic and Humanitarian Forum in St. Petersburg.

The Russian Federation and African countries say neo-colonialism, the imposing of conditions, and double standards deprive states and peoples of the right to make sovereign choices about their development paths.
