Walvis Bay prepares for World Ocean Day

All roads lead to Walvis Bay Independence Beach, where about 600 people are expected to attend the World Ocean Day celebrations hosted by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.

Preparations for the day are in full swing, which is to be celebrated under the theme 'Catalysing Action for Our Oceans and Climate'.

During the week, several awareness events were held at the coastal towns of Henties Bay, Walvis Bay, Oranjamund, Luderitz, and Swakopmund.

VP urges youth to get involved in Agriculture sector

Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says agriculture in Africa is expected to meet the dual objectives of providing food and helping people escape poverty.

Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah further says that the agriculture sector can produce Africa's next billionaires.

Therefore, the Vice President calls on all young people countrywide to develop an interest in agriculture during a stakeholder engagement held at Omaruru. 

About 70% of the Namibian population depends on agricultural activities for livelihood, mostly in the subsistence sector.

The Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations, and Employment Creation, Utoni Nujoma, urged the government to act in the best interests of workers by providing affordable housing and improving working conditions and wages.

Nujoma said this during the Walvis Bay Seafers United Land and Housing Federation's launch of its Fishermen Village and Investment Trust at the weekend in Walvis Bay.

Walvis Bay Municipality called to provide free land to schools and hospitals

The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni, has appealed to the municipality of Walvis Bay to provide free land for much-needed services such as schools and hospitals at Farm 37.

He made this appeal during the Walvis Bay Seafers United Land and Housing Federation's launch of its Fishermen Village and Investment Trust at a fundraising gala dinner.

Uutoni says the government struggles to get land from local authorities, but their prices are very expensive, which delays development in some areas.

Tsoaxu Daman leadership dispute takes a turn

The dispute in the Tsoaxu Daman Traditional Council at Otjimbingwe Settlement in the Erongo Region's Karibib Constituency has taken another turn.

The faction in the traditional authority led by Senior Councillor Jonathan Neumbo is now facing corruption allegations levelled against them by the opposing faction.

The Tsoaxu Daman Council has been marred by infighting with Neumbo's faction, calling on Chief Joshua Seibeb to step down from the throne.

Customs are enablers for tangible benefits from AfCFTA - Shiimi

The Minister of Finance and Public Enterprise, Iipumbu Shiimi, says the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is a high-ambition trade agreement with a comprehensive scope that includes critical areas such as digital trade and investment protection.

Shiimi said this during the 30th World Customs Organisation East and Southern Africa Governing Meeting held at Swakopmund.

The AfCFTA is the world's largest free trade area, bringing together 55 countries of the African Union (AU) and eight Regional Economic Communities to create a single market for the continent.

Swakopmund Municipality unveils new logo

The Swakopmund Municipality has unveiled its new logo.

Chief Executive Officer Alfeus Benjamin says this marks a significant step in showcasing the town's identity and progress.

The new logo symbolises Swakopmund's place on the Namibian map, representing its growth and development on the African continent.

The unveiling ceremony, which was attended by town officials, residents, and stakeholders, highlighted Swakopmund's emergence as a vibrant hub within the Erongo Region and the wider SADC community.

Walvis Bay youth to benefit from Youth Climate Action Fund

Walvis Bay will join 38 other local authorities at the US-based Johns Hopkins University's new Youth Climate Action Fund, where it will receive close to N$1 million for disbursement to youth-led climate action initiatives.

This was brought to light by Walvis Bay Mayor Trevino Forbes at the ordinary council meeting. 

Forbes says efforts stemming from the new Youth Climate Action Fund will advance critical community goals such as meeting decarbonisation commitments or reducing consumption-based emissions.

Erongo Regional Council remains best performing

The Erongo Regional Council has, for the past three consecutive years, been rated as the best performer among its peers.

Regional Council Chairperson Benitha Imbamba, who was speaking at a regional council meeting in Swakopmund, emphasised the importance of customer service.

Imbamba, while expressing her satisfaction, reminded the councillors of their duties to deliver effectively and efficiently.
