Minister Iipumbu emphasises vital role of informal economy in economic landscape

The Minister of Industrialization and Trade, Lucia Iipumbu, says that the government recognises the invaluable role that the informal economy plays in the nation's economic landscape. 

Iipumbu says that the men and women who form the backbone of this sector contribute significantly to the GDP and create much-needed employment opportunities. 

She said this during a consultation meeting aimed at drafting a Special Economic Zone Bill (SEZ).

Old export processing zones transformed into special economic zones

Namibia is currently transforming the old export processing zones (EPZs) into special economic zones (SEZs).

The EPZs were unsuccessful in collecting the requisite taxes for the Treasury, and they also contributed to Namibia being blacklisted as a tax haven.

The Minister of Industrialization and Trade, Lucia Iipumbu, revealed this during a consultation meeting with stakeholders on the draft Special Economic Zone Bill held at Walvis Bay.

FDI a key contributor to economic development - Andre

Andre says the FDI legislation should ensure an enabling environment for foreign investors and Namibian firms, including international arbitration of disputes, the right to remit profits, and access to foreign exchange.

Otjimbingwe community calls for removal of Tsoaxudama chief

The community of Otjimbingwe took to the streets of the settlement to petition for the removal of Tsoaxudama Traditional Authority Chief Josua Seibeb, who was coronated on November 12, 2022.

They want Chief Seibeb to resign to allow for the appointment or election of a leader of their choice who will listen and address their challenges.

They say that Chief Seibeb failed to render assistance and promote developmental projects that would improve the standard of living in the community.

PDM calls on President Mbumba to take charge of fishing industry

The leader of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), McHenry Venaani, has called on President Nangolo Mbumba to look into the affairs of the fishing industry. 

Venaani made the remarks while joining the demonstration by the fishermen employed through the Government Employment Redress Programme, who handed over petitions to the Ministries of Labour, Industrial Relations, and Employment Creation and that of Fisheries at Walvis Bay.

Karibib economic growth and development

The Chairperson of the Karibib Town Council, Lazarus Kanelombe, shared the town's journey of economic growth and development before and after independence.

Karibib is located on the main road between the capital city of Windhoek and the coastal town of Swakopmund, about 100km west of Okahandja. 

Karibib exists today mostly due to the railway development between the coast and inland Namibia. The Karibib railway building is a national monument. 

Man survives gruesome attack at Walvis Bay

A 28-year-old man survived a gruesome attack early last Sunday morning.

It is believed that an unknown assailant attacked the man with a sharp object, believed to be either a knife or a broken bottle, in the early hours of Sunday at the Tutaleni residential in Walvis Bay. 

The victim sustained open wounds on his right shoulder and right upper ribs, which left his lungs and intestines protruding. 

The man was taken to the hospital, where his condition was described as stable but critical. 

Erongo RED Declares N$10,2 Million Dividend

Erongo Regional Electricity Distributor has declared dividends of N$10,2 million.

The announcement was made by Erongo Red's Chief Executive, Immanuel !Hanabeb, in Walvis Bay.

!Hanabeb stated that during the period under review, the company provided subsidies totaling N$24 million to pensioners and vulnerable individuals. Additionally, nearly N$500,000 was spent on various corporate social responsibility activities, including graduate programs and job attachment opportunities.
