Science teachers in the Zambezi Region are attending a four-day training workshop to improve their skills.

The first of its kind, the training is being facilitated by lecturers from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), sponsored by Risk Based Solutions.

One of the facilitators from NUST, Professor Onjefu Sylvanus said teachers need the training to have a full understanding of the subject and prepare their learners well to grasp the basics of science once they reach varsity level.

One of the participants, David Lubinda, an HOD at Nsundano Technical School, says the training came at the right time as most teachers lack practical training.

"Most of the problems that we encounter or the challenges we face are perhaps practical. Some schools are not equipped with the right apparatus to carry out the practicals, because Physics, Chemistry and Biology are more related to practicals, so schools struggle with practicals because we lack laboratory equipment. Those are some of the challenges, and also textbooks, we really do not have enough textbooks, especially for this new curriculum that they have implemented. "

The Chief Regional Officer for Zambezi Region, Regina Ndopu-Lubinda, applauded the sponsors for seeing the need to improve education.

Ndopu-Lubinda also appealed for more stakeholders to follow suit as many schools in the region still lack the basics needed for education to take place conductively.
