More than 100 senior citizens of Arandis staged a demonstration over alleged poor management by the town council.

The senior citizens have also appealed to the Council to write off their debts.

The elderly accuse the council of keeping tenders aside for friends and families of those in the council management.

They say this contributes to the high unemployment rate among residents of the town, particularly the youth.

They also raised concerns with high rates and taxes as well as water bills, and argue that the council acts unfairly when evicting tenants from council-owned houses.

Other concerns raised relate to the town's swimming pool, which the demonstrators say has been turned into a bar, which does not benefit the community in the least; and the alleged sale of what was once the fire station situated on public property,  to a private individual.

Town Mayor Risto Kapenda accepted their petition and promised feedback within five working days.

Arandis is located in the western part of the Erongo Region, and has a population of more than 12 000.
