The Fifth National Development Plan (NDP5) has been extended for another two years.
The Director General of the National Planning Commission (NPC) Obeth Kandjoze made the announcement at a media briefing in Windhoek.
NDP5 is a five-year development framework document, launched in 2017 and originally expected to end in 2022.
The document's formulation was widely consulted on, and it sets targets for a range of industries, towards transforming Namibia's economy.
Execution of NDP5 has now been extended for two more years, as resolved by the Cabinet.
The extension means the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6) will be launched in 2025.
NDP6 will be the last of the consecutive planning documents to run towards Vision 2030, covering the financial years from 2025/2026 to 2030/2031.
"The National Planning Commission and its stakeholders undertook a comprehensive study. With this study and supplemented by other studies and initiatives by other ministries and agencies, government will formulate an economic recovery and resilience strategy to underpin NDP 6", says NPC's Obeth Kandjoze.
For now, Kandjoze says, the Commission will focus on implementing the Harambee Prosperity Plan, at an accelerated pace, up to 2025.
He added that with the subdued economy and constrained public resources, government through the cabinet has instructed wisdom advise, concentrated efforts on prioritizing HPP2 programs an unfinished business of NDP5 during the period of 2023/ 2024- 2024/2025 while NDP 6 is being developed.
The commission will also embark on a review of the implementation of Vision 2030
"The National Planning Commission is finalizing the review of 2030, documenting our achievements, challenges, and recommendations across all the thematic areas and sectors for future considerations."
