UNDP Economic Advisor in Namibia, Wilmot Reeves, expressed a serious concern with the dangers posed by plastic waste materials to the environment worldwide.
Speaking at an occasion to mark World Environment Day organised by the City of Windhoek today (Friday), Reeves bemoaned the fact that millions of plastics are produced globally for use in many purposes but then later end up as waste.
He urged various stakeholders to play their role in preserving the environment for current and future generations.
The diplomat explained that the United Nations committed to supporting Namibia in its drive towards environmental conservation and urged the citizens to do their part.
Windhoek Deputy Mayor Magdalena Lombardt says the city has initiated a plastics collection in an effort to keep the environment clean.
Since June 3, the City, in partnership with various schools, has started the plastics campaign and collected plastics mostly in the several suburbs.
The plastics are recycled into other usable products.
The day was also marked with various performances raising awareness about the importance of environmental protection.
