The City of Windhoek (CoW) has launched the Ebike4Windhoek pilot project as part of its effort to reduce carbon emissions and increase transport options. Non-motorised transport has an important role to play in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and greening the economy in the context of providing and promoting more sustainable transport options.

The project will assist 35 students with electric bicycles who are dependent on unreliable and expensive transport options such as taxis to get to or from campus for a period of three months. Windhoek Mayor Joseph Uapingene stated that the number of taxis registered in Windhoek in 2012 was substantial at almost 7,000, many of which are old, poorly maintained, and emit high carbon dioxide emissions.

The Acting Executive Dean of Computing and Informatics at NUST, Professor Fungai Bhunu Shava, says with this launch, they are edging forward with promoting and testing new technologies in the transport space.
