Namibia is aiming to improve on its top 30 freedom of the media world rankings by Reporters Without Borders.

The Ministry of Information, Communication, and Technology's Executive Director, Dr. Audrin Mathe, said this at a special award ceremony of the International Festival for Freedom of Expression and the Press (FILEP) in the capital of Burkina Faso, where Namibia was crowned Champion of Press Freedom in Africa.

Namibia had been occupying the top spot consistently over the years and until 2021 before being toppled by the Seychelles last year.

Namibia reclaimed its number-one spot in 2023. Because of this consistency, the organisers of FILEP, at its 10th edition, decided to recognise Namibia as the champion of press freedom in Africa.

But for Dr. Mathe, there is no room for complacency now that the bar has been set. Namibia ranks 22nd among 180 countries worldwide.

Ouagadougou has been the host of the 10th edition of the Festival of Freedom of Expression and the Press (FILEP), which brought together more than 200 participants from 40 countries.
