As drought persists across the Kunene Region, Khorixas' constituency office is challenged by transport to deliver much-needed food aid to rural residents.

This was confirmed by Constituency Councillor Sebastian !Gobs in an interview with nbc News.

The persistent drought spell in the area has affected both humans and livestock, including harvesting and grazing pastures, as little or no rainfall has been received there for years.

Khorixas' five settlements have over 2,700 households affected and in need of drought food aid.

"We only have one vehicle that could go around the five areas that I have mentioned. So sometimes it takes a long time to deliver because the vehicle is a single cab that cannot load a lot of consignments at once. So we are travelling, for instance, to one area three or four times. So that is a challenge that we are facing—that food is not coming to the people, and the people are becoming frustrated."

Councillor !Gobs added that residents of the town have been flocking to the constituency office to collect food aid.

"People are flocking to the office. They want to collect their drought relief food. We are hopeful that, because the programme has been extended till next year march. So in this remainder of the month we are hopeful that we are going to get trucks and some more vehicles to assist the community at large."

He also added that there's an influx of farmers from area to area, who are seeking better grazing sites for their livestock.

Others have reported numbers of livestock that have since perished due to drought.

In this year's Governor's Regional Address, Marius Sheya acknowledged that the delivery and distribution of food consignments were hampered by lack of vehicles in all constituencies and bad road conditions.

Since 2019, the region reported that boreholes are also being drilled and rehabilitated to mitigate the effects of droughts.
