The Popular Democratic Movement Member of Parliament, Maximalliant Katjimune, has called for urgent action to combat the deep-rooted issues contributing to high crime rates in the country.

Katjimune was contributing to the motion presented by PDM MP Mike Venaani to address the high crime rates.

Katjimune highlighted the prevalence rate of gender-based violence and its devastating consequences, particularly for women and children. 

He underlined the intricate connection between gender inequality, cultural norms, and the increasing numbers of crimes, stressing that these are not isolated issues.

"We cannot turn a blind eye to this growing menace that threatens the very fabric of our society. To effectively combat this challenge, we must delve into the root causes fueling this wave of criminality. We must develop a systematic and methodological approach to addressing these high crime rates, one that provides a proper diagnosis addressing the root of the problem rather than a reactionary one."

Beyond gender-based violence, Katjimune also addressed the issues of poverty and unemployment in the country, emphasising the dire circumstances faced by many households and limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. 

Katjimune noted that the high youth unemployment rate was projected to persist, potentially driving individuals toward criminal activities as a means of survival.

"To effectively tackle this issue, we must invest in comprehensive social and economic policies that uplift the marginalised and bridge the widening gap between the affluent and the underprivileged. This involves empowering Namibian people economically. We must foster an environment conducive to job creation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic growth and encourage investments in key sectors. "

Another member of PDM, Hidipo Hamata, addressed the issue of lax firearms regulations, which he attributes to the high crime rates. 

Hamata pointed out that easy accessibility to firearms had played a critical role in exacerbating the problem, resulting in weapons falling into the wrong hands. 

"We must comprehensively address these pressing issues. By strengthening firearms regulations, enhancing law enforcement accountability, and securing our financial and security systems, we can create a safer and more secure environment for our fellow Namibians."
