The Namibian government, in collaboration with the Namibia National Teachers Union (NANTU) and the Namibia Public Workers Union (NAPWU), has inked a comprehensive collective agreement on salary and conditions of employment.

This pact promises to bring about economic relief for public workers who have been going through financial hardships.

One of the central pillars of this agreement is the adjustment of maximum qualifying home loan amounts under the Home Owners' Scheme for Staff Members.

Lower-income staff members are expected to benefit significantly from increased access to housing loans, potentially opening the door to affordable home ownership amid escalating living costs.

The agreement addresses compensation disparities by aligning housing allowances for the management cadre and recognising their pivotal roles.

Non-management staff will see substantial increases, with a 20% boost in housing and transport allowances. These adjustments aim to enhance overall living standards for workers across various job categories.

In an effort to bolster financial stability, a flat increase of 600 dollars per month for specific grade levels and a 5% increase on the basic salary for Grades 13 to 1 have been implemented.

These adjustments aim to provide a fair and standardised salary structure for public workers.

Acknowledging the dynamic nature of the economic environment, the agreement includes a benchmarking study on medical aid and housing.

Petrus Nevonga, General Secretary of NAPWU, was happy with the outcome of the negotiations.

"This collective effort reflects our commitment to the well-being of our members. We believe these adjustments will not only ease financial burdens but also contribute to a more resilient and prosperous Namibia."
