The Governor of the Zambezi Region, Alufea Sampofu, says education is one of the sectors facing challenges in the region, resulting in poor performance.
Sampofu was speaking during a courtesy call by the European Union delegation.
The governor said although the country produces qualified teachers, learners still perform poorly as a result of a lack of adequate classrooms and a conducive environment, especially in flood-prone areas.
''We have 13 schools there that are always flooded and affected by these floods, but that does not stop the learning and teaching process.''
''We have other schools that are still in traditional structures with sticks and grass; the learning process there is very difficult. In some schools, we still have tents to avoid children learning under trees; we are providing tents.''
Sampofu, however, said there is a need to take advantage of the annual flood waters.
The governor further pointed out the immediate need for an intermediate hospital and additional district hospitals in the region to avoid referring patients to Oshakati, Rundu, and Windhoek.
Sampofu also said that vast hectars of land, availed of by traditional authorities to the government, remain an open area, receiving investors for various projects, including much-needed green schemes in the region.
