Strong winds, accompanied by hailstorms and rain, caused damage to houses in Onepandaulo Village in the Endola Constituency of Ohangwena Region on Saturday evening.

Roofs were blown off, and trees were uprooted. Fruit trees, on which many depend for an income, were also not spared.

Boundary walls were flattened by Mother Nature, while some houses, like that of Christophina Shivute, were destroyed.

The destruction left many residents helpless and open to nature's mercy.

Shivute says a wind that started blowing around 4:00 on Saturday morning was too strong, ending up destroying huts and corrugated iron shack structures.

She has no answer when asked how she and her two children would survive another night of rain following the wind damage from Saturday night.

The wind was very strong, it blew off our sleeping room roof, and hail was falling on me and my children. The children were scared, and they started crying. We had nowhere to run for shelter as corrugated iron sheets were flying all over the fields. Our maize meal and blankets were all wet, and we were left without food.'

The Councillor of Endola Constituency, Ferdinand Shifidi, says many houses suffered wind and hail damage, to the point where food in some households was soaked, leaving people without anything to eat.

"It is a very serious issue, it touched the community of Onepandaulo. We heard that it touched not only Onepandaulo village alone, it touched also some villages in Oshana Region, Okatana constituency, and some villages in Engela constituency, the Oshikondiilongo area has been touched."

Shifidi is thankful, however, that no one was hurt in the incident.

He visited many affected houses in his constituency and is compiling a report to be forwarded to the regional office.

That report would look into how people can be assisted with food.

Many victims are now forced to dig deeper into their pockets to rebuild their houses—a difficult task, especially for pensioners and the unemployed.
