The Electoral Commission of Namibia's (ECN) Commissioner, Emmerentia Leonard, has urged Supervisors of Registration to conduct their work in a non-partisan and transparent manner.
Dr. Leonard was speaking at the opening of a two-week training for supervisors of registration at Otjiwarongo.
Namibians will go to the polls on November 27, and the Electoral Commission of Namibia is preparing the Supervisors of Registration for the General Registration of Voters.
The Supervisors of Registration will conduct the General Registration of Voters exercise from the 3rd of June to the 1st of August.
ECN has employed regional electoral officers in all 14 of the country's regions.
The training will enable the supervisors of registration to understand their roles and responsibilities.
"As regional and constituency heads, you must conduct your work in a nonpartisan and transparent manner and within the confines of the law. I therefore urge you to approach this training with dedication. The commission expects 100 percent attendance at all the training sessions, even if you have attended similar trainings in the past, because the success of the scheduled electoral processes relies on your competence and professionalism."
ECN, she says, will not tolerate laxity by any of the electoral staff in the undertaking of their duties.
"This will enable you to conduct the Grv as planned and, subsequently, the presidential and National Assembly elections. We are also going to take you through the electoral operations at the heart of our mandate, ranging from the registration of voters that is already covered by the GRV to the civic and voter education campaigns, and I must inform you as part of the mandate of the constitution for the first time in the land that the commission has introduced civic education since 2022 already," said Peter Shaama, ECN's Chief Electoral and Referenda Office.
Out of the 156 people attending the training, 121 will be appointed as per the number of constituencies.
