The Swakopmund municipality's engineering department reported that the more than N$28 million invested in sewage infrastructure over the past decade has significantly reduced sewage spills in the coastal town.

This improvement comes after extensive repairs and restructuring of the sewage system.

Since 2014, the Swakopmund municipality has implemented 10 projects to improve the sewage infrastructure.

The projects include 26 pump stations, a new wastewater treatment plant, and the relocation of sewer lines.

Before the relocation of the pipes, some residents experienced sewage spills in their yards.

The majority of the sewer upgrades were done in the Mondesa township.

The money for the projects came from the municipal coffers, and McClune has attributed the achievement to residents who pay their bills on time.

He, however, says that when residents do not pay, there is an impact on meeting the growing demands because projects are delayed.

McClune says the sewage, water, and road infrastructure needs are all competing for one financial source, and they are implemented concurrently.

Although statistics indicate that there are about 76,000 residents in Swakopmund, the municipality says only 16,000 residents have utility accounts.
