Residents of Rundu are calling on the council to address the water crisis in the town. 

They made the call during the presentation of the 2024–2025 draft budget and tariffs.

Some of the residents who have taps said there has not been running water, while others say they have no water at all. 

This has pushed the residents, such as those of the Sun City location, who resorted to breaking water pipes to fetch water.

The Rundu Town Council Engineer, Sakaria Shopati, says the council has come up with plans to mitigate the issue.

"The council is trying to drill more boreholes. Recently, we completed a study and borehole siting of possible 38 boreholes that will be funded by the Ministry of Agriculture through their intervention and partly by the council, so those are some of the interventions that we have come up with. We have also planned to construct some booster lines that are like taking a booster line from the main line that is going to the NDF base to boost the areas of Suncity, Long to Long, and Sikanduko."

Shopati further stated that Namwater has appointed a contractor to build a bigger water reservoir to increase pressure. 

He says the council needs money to accelerate service delivery. The council received N$4 million from the government for the 2024–2025 financial year. 

"The population has grown by more than 80,000, and these are the people occupying most of the informal areas at no cost and demanding services from the council, and they are also making up the debt that was mentioned of N$409 million. Imagine if the town council could collect even N$300 million now from the outstanding debts. How much development can we bring to the council? I am sure there will be a few cries with regards to municipal services if that is to be done." 

The Rundu Town Council needs N$81 million for its capital projects.
