Erongo RED, in collaboration with the Ministry of Mines and Energy, has electrified 151 houses in Harambee Informal Settlement's Extension 8 in Karibib for N$3.6 million.
The regional electricity distributor was awarded more than N$4.5 million by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, of which N$3.6 million was used to electrify 151 dwellings in Karibib.
This resulted in a saving of N$829,000, which will now be used to connect additional houses.
In conjunction with the Karibib Town Council, Erongo RED has identified 29 Shack Dweller Federation houses currently under construction for electrification, with an envisaged cost of more than N$600,000.
The Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy, Kornelia Shilunga, says the successful execution of this project and many others in the region demonstrates the capacity, experience, and readiness to collaborate with any stakeholder to advance and accelerate the electrification initiative.
"Today marks a significant milestone in our journey towards inclusive and sustainable development. Access to electricity is not just a matter of convenience; it is a fundamental human right and a crucial enabler of progress. With this project, we are not merely lighting up homes but igniting the potential within every member of our communities."
Shilunga added that the influx of people from rural to urban and peri-urban areas is at an alarming rate, putting pressure on the provision of basic services such as electricity.
The Chief Executive Officer of Erongo Red, Immanuel !Hanabeb, says that Erongo RED remains committed to working with all stakeholders to serve the residents of the region.
"As we inaugurate the electrification of Harambee, I must highlight a significant challenge: copper theft and damage to electrical apparatus. These actions result in unnecessary maintenance costs and disrupt the provision of electricity to residents and critical services such as hospitals and clinics. I am appealing to all beneficiaries and residents of Karibib to remain vigilant and assist us in protecting our infrastructure from those who seek to steal copper and those condoning these actions by purchasing stolen copper cables."
Karibib Mayor Davey van Wyk said the inauguration marks the beginning of a new chapter in the lives of the residents.

This initiative aligns with the concerns voiced by community members and signifies a commitment to addressing long-standing infrastructure deficits."
