The Erongo Police have identified the missing man near Cape Cross as 44-year-old Namibian, Lisius Nkandi.

Police report that on Friday, August 2, at around 21:30, a Namibian-registered fishing vessel sailed from the Walvis Bay harbour, streaming on her own power, with 10 crew members, including the captain and the chief mate, Lisius Nkandi.

The police say the next day, on Saturday (August 3), while the crew was sailing, the vessel got stuck on the cylinder head, could not move, and eventually broke down.

Six days later, on Friday, August 9, with the assistance of some fishing companies, seven (7) crew members were rescued and taken back to the harbour safely.

The police statement further says that nine days later, on Sunday, August 18, at about 14:00, Nkandi allegedly disembarked, launched a rubber dingy without any motor, and abandoned the vessel, sailing towards the land. Up to date, his whereabouts are unknown.

The captain and the chief technician are still on the vessel in the same area.

However, the police and volunteers continue to search for Nkandi and investigate the case.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts can contact Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu at 081 246 4757 or the nearest police station.
