The International University of Management's (IUM) Annual Cultural Festival commenced today under the theme "Echoes of the Past: Embracing Our Diverse Cultures."
The event aims to highlight the importance of preserving cultural heritage and practices, as well as recognising various cultural influences that contribute to the country's shared experience.
The cultural festival brought together students from different traditional groups to celebrate and honour the rich heritage that defines their communities.
Pro Vice-Chancellor of IUM, Charles Makanyeza, says that the festival is a testament to IUM's dedication to promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of the nation's diverse cultures.
"By celebrating these diverse traditions, we acknowledge the richness of human experience and foster a meaningful space for dialogue and connection between different cultures. This event underscores the commitment to bridging cultural divides and enhancing our collective appreciation of the global fabric. By engaging with these traditions, we strengthen the bonds that unite us and celebrate the diversity that enriches our community."
Hompa of the Mbunza Traditional Authority, Alfons Kaundu, who also attended the event, shared a few words of wisdom with the students.
"I have observed with great concern that most of our young people are emulating European culture. It is a huge concern. Therefore, I would like to urge every tradition to ensure that their cultural practices are observed and preserved."
The chief added that every culture has its own customs, traditions, and practices that should be fully respected.
The event, which ends on Saturday, is also comprised of traditional performances and dramas by students that display their traditional attire as well as showcase their cultural practices.
