Chaos erupted today at the University of Namibia's (UNAM) main campus when members of the Landless People's Movement (LPM) attempted to distribute flyers, which is currently not allowed by the institution.

LPM members were distributing flyers when they were blocked by security and police officers from entering the premises.

Since UNAM's ban on political activities on campus in April, LPM questioned why the Swapo Party Youth League was allowed to hold political activities on campus.

LPM's Youth Command President, Duminga Ndala, accused the university of being biased despite established rules and procedures for such engagements.

Ndala emphasised the need for a dialogue with the university's Vice Chancellor to ensure transparency and find a fair solution for all parties.

"We are a law-abiding political party; we would like to engage UNAM management, and in fact, they should tell their security to stop intimidating citizens because our students are also not safe on campus. It's important that we engage the students and also tell them which political party to vote for because, as the LPM, we see ourselves as an alternative party."

UNAM's Spokesperson Simon Namesho stated that the SPYL's political activity on campus was unauthorised and assured that the issue would be investigated.

"It's too early to talk about the consequences, as they were only called in today for an engagement to enquire about why they conducted themselves in an unauthorised manner, and only then will action be determined if there was an unauthorised activity on campus. We also understand that it's causing these kinds of activities, and that's why we have collective engagements not only on the Swapo matter but all societies registered as political parties on campus. Moving forward, there are annual activities that are planned, and if there's something beyond that, they then need to seek permission to be granted."

Namesho added that a meeting to consult with all parties was scheduled for today but was disrupted by the LPM protest.
