The Electricity Control Board's (ECB) decision to prohibit local authorities from blocking prepaid electricity meters over unpaid municipal services is now being challenged in court.
This legal action follows the regulator's stance that such practices violate provisions of the Electricity Act and related regulations.
The ECB had previously stated that local authorities' actions to block prepaid meters for unpaid municipal bills violated the rights of consumers and the regulatory framework governing electricity services.
However, following the legal challenge, the ECB is now restricted from taking any enforcement actions against licensees who engage in this practice until the court proceedings are resolved.
In a public notice, the ECB emphasised that while the legal case is ongoing, it will not be able to investigate complaints regarding the blocking of prepaid electricity meters.
The ECB urges affected customers to resolve any outstanding municipal arrears directly with their local authorities.
The regulator also reminds the public of their right to seek redress and encourages continued dialogue with municipal officials to avoid disruptions in essential services.
