NamWater will invest over N$230 million to replace the 46-year-old Ogongo/Oshakati Pipeline.

Following a bidding process in January this year, three contractors have been selected to carry out the 53 kilometre project, which is divided into three sections.

The current pipeline, which has reached its lifespan, is facing numerous damages, and certain sections have deteriorated to a level that threatens the security of water supply for customers.

The pipeline is also restricted to a maximum pressure of 1.8 bars, which leads to frequent breakages.

This issue is particularly evident at two major connections, the Elimi South and Omugwelume pipelines, as demand surpasses supply.

The N$236 million project is part of Namibia's Water Support Programme aimed at ensuring water security and other emergency projects.

While the procurement process has now been completed, there were some delays, primarily due to a court case filed by one of the bidders.

"The scheduled duration of the project is 12 months including the contractors holiday in December and also January and non-working days. The court case instituted by one of the bidders really cost significant delay although the people are really suffering out there as I'm saying, some of these things are part of the democratic processes and sometimes it's really painful when you are getting calls even in the middle of the night people have no water while we are sitting in courtrooms but its part of the process, that's why we are here so we can really sort out this problem," explained NamWater CEO Abraham Nehemia.

The new pipeline will alleviate water shortages and meet the growing water demand in the affected areas.

The three contractors have been urged to approach the project with utmost diligence and dedication, particularly by adhering to the established timeline and high-quality services.

During the contract signing Nehemia emphasized the importance of proper maintenance.

He assured that NamWater will continue to invest in reliable water systems to address customer complaints effectively.
