The Divundu Village Council has approved the upgrading of two local townships to form Extensions Four and Five for the current financial year.
Extension Four will accommodate residents who were relocated to make way for the development of Namibia Berries Farm, which the Chief Executive Officer of Divundu, Athanasius Maghumbo, revealed has already yielded positive contributions.
He noted that the project has helped keep local youth at home who would otherwise migrate to Aussenkehr in search of seasonal work on grape farms. Currently, Namibia Berries Farm employs 70 permanent employees and 200 seasonal workers.
Extension Five is designated for low-income earners. "This group includes individuals working in shops and as security guards," Maghumbo explained. "We need to accommodate them as they are integral to the village’s development. We cannot allow them to form a separate township, as this would create challenges."
Additionally, a new shopping centre is in the final stages of construction and is expected to offer shops and banking services.
