Road fatalities in Kavango West have so far decreased from 14 deaths in 2023 to nine this year.
There has also been a drop in serious injuries, with 27 recorded last year to 25 during the same period.
The number is just some of the statistics revealed at the 2024/2025 Road Safety Campaign Launch at Nkurenkuru in the Kavango West Region.
Kavango West's Road Safety Campaign has officially kicked off, and it's all about protecting lives, safeguarding property, reducing road safety crashes, and related violations.
Reading a speech on behalf of the Police Inspector General, Kavango West's Commander says the festive season is a busy period and locals should remain vigilant at all times.
"My appeal to the masses is to take care of themselves, their properties, and to also care for others. Inform your neighbors, or the nearest police station. If you are to leave your house with no person to look after it, refrain from withdrawing a lot of cash, and if you do carry lots of money, feel free to contact the police for assistance. I urge you once more to report any suspicious persons or incidents, as the police will be readily available to ensure that you celebrate this festive season peacefully."
Nkurenkuru's Mayor also delivered an address on behalf of the Governor.
"Our collective hope is that this campaign will reach and have an impact on a number of road users and educate them on road safety, as well as other benefits offered by different stakeholders during the execution of this important undertaking.
The Namibian Public Passenger Transport Association in Kavango West promises to work together with stakeholders during the festive season and is urging passengers to speak out when drivers break traffic rules.
"We also encourage our passengers to have the right to tell our operators not to use a cell phone while driving, not to overspeed, and to keep within the regulated speed limit."
The road safety campaign, which started on Thursday, will go on until 17 January 2025.
