Affiliates of the National Youth Council (NYC) gathered at the council's head office to voice their dissatisfaction with the appointment of an interim board.
Upon arrival, the group found the building locked, with police stationed on the premises. They had planned to hold a media conference early in the morning but were denied access due to last Friday's events.
Julia Nekwaya, a member of the NYC, explained the group’s intentions:
"We came here this morning as affiliates of the NYC to hold a press conference in the boardroom. Some arrived as early as 7:00 a.m., only to find police and the acting director closing the NYC down. Last Friday, our grievances were heard by the police, and the interim board left. Today, we came to resume our operations as affiliates of the NYC."
Interim board chairperson Beverly Silas-!Garas criticized the protesters' actions and expressed her disappointment in the unrest so early in the year. She highlighted the board's role in maintaining operations while a court case is pending.
"The conduct of the illegal protestors is uncalled for. As the interim board, we don’t know how to engage with them if their intent is to remove us from office. We have no issue with youth protesting, but it must be done within the confines of the law and in a peaceful manner without disrupting council operations," said Silas-!Garas.
The confrontation underscores ongoing tensions surrounding the interim board’s legitimacy and the affiliates’ demands for resolution.
