Namibia and Portugal are set to deepen their partnership, expanding cooperation in politics, trade, education, and sustainable development.
Speaking at a media engagement, Portugal’s Ambassador to Namibia, Rui Carmo, outlined ambitious plans to boost investment and enhance cultural exchange between the two nations.
A key milestone in this growing relationship is the upcoming fifth round of political consultations in Namibia—the first since 2022. Ambassador Carmo revealed that negotiations on a bilateral services agreement and a double taxation agreement are nearing completion.
Namibia and Portugal are also strengthening collaboration in international forums, particularly in sustainable ocean management. Namibia is part of a high-level panel for a sustainable ocean economy, and Portugal sees potential for further cooperation.
“We would like to foster stronger ties between Namibia and the Portuguese-speaking community,” Ambassador Carmo said. “Namibia has been an associated observer in the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries since 2004, and we aim to build on this relationship through cultural and educational initiatives.”
On the economic front, Portuguese companies exploring oil in Namibia’s Orange Basin have already established a presence in the country. Ambassador Carmo emphasized Portugal’s commitment to finalizing agreements on investment promotion and protection.
“Beyond trade, we are keen to collaborate on cultural heritage preservation and ensuring that youth have greater access to cultural resources,” he added.
Last week, Namibia and Portugal signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Port of Sines and Namibia, a move set to promote inclusive green growth under the Global Gateway agenda.
Education and cultural ties also remain strong. Since 2011, Portugal has supported Portuguese language education in Namibian secondary schools, while a university-level collaboration with the University of Namibia has been ongoing for the past two years.
With political and economic cooperation on the rise, the partnership between Namibia and Portugal is poised for further growth.
