Founding President Sam Nujoma has been recognized as a remarkable leader whose unwavering commitment and ideologies were vital in achieving a free Namibia.
This sentiment was echoed by speakers at the First Regional Memorial Service held on Thursday in his home village, Etunda.
A large crowd gathered to pay their respects and honor his memory.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by Vice President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President Nangolo Mbumba described the late founding president as a legend who guided Namibia both before and after independence under the SWAPO Party banner.
He emphasized Nujoma's dedication, vision, and commitment, which remained steadfast despite the dangers he faced until Namibia achieved freedom.
Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba, in his tribute, noted that Nujoma's rich history could not be captured in just a few hours.
He characterized the late Nujoma as the driving force that Namibia needed.
Nujoma led the Swapo Party for 47 years before passing the leadership to Pohamba.
Sofia Shaningwa, the Secretary General of the Swapo Party also paid her respects. Governor Erginus Endjala spoke on behalf of the region's residents, stating that Nujoma was celebrated as a hero and a son of the soil for putting the region on the map.
In a message from Nujoma's three surviving siblings, they praised their brother for his bravery and unwavering spirit, attributing these qualities to their late parents, David and Helvi Kondobolo Nujoma, which has made the Nujoma name a formidable legacy.
