A burial at Heroes' Acre, the country's official national shrine, is reserved for individuals who have been formally recognised as national heroes by the government.

This honour is bestowed on those who have gone above and beyond in contributions to the country's liberation struggle, national development, or societal well-being.

The decision to bestow heroes' status on an individual is made by the government, based on an individual's historical impact and legacy, ensuring that those interred at Heroes' Acre reflect the values and history of Namibia.

Located about 10 kilometres south of Windhoek, Heroes' Acre was inaugurated on August 26, 2002, to serve as a symbol of patriotism and national pride.

The monument was established to honour and immortalise those who played crucial roles in shaping Namibia's history.

The first person buried at Heroes' Acre was Lieutenant General Dimo Hamaambo, the former Commander of the Namibia Defence Force.

On March 1, 2025, the Founding President and Father of the Namibian Nation, Sam Nujoma, will be buried at Heroes' Acre following a state funeral.

Dr. Nujoma, who died at the age of 95, led Namibia's liberation struggle as the first president of the Swapo Party and served as the country's first head of state from 1990 to 2005.

His monumental role in Namibia's independence and nation-building efforts earned him a place at Heroes' Acre alongside other national heroes.
