Hundreds of mourners gathered at Omulunga Stadium in Grootfontein for the memorial service honouring the late Founding President Sam Nujoma, whom they described as a courageous and resilient leader.
In his speech, Otjozondjupa Governor James Uerikua noted that successful battles, such as the one at Hamakari in the Okakarara area, and the peace treaty signed at Khorab Farm in Otavi 110 years ago, motivated many Namibians to join the liberation struggle in subsequent years.
He highlighted the joint commission established by the Brazzaville Protocol in 1988, which led to the signing of UN Resolution 435 at Mount Etjo in 1989, paving the way for Namibia's freedom and independence.
"The legacy of His Excellency, the first president, is felt not only in Africa but around the globe. He was a great statesman. Alongside other pioneering African leaders, he advocated for a fully free and independent Africa that could thrive on its own resources without relying on external support. Namibia and Africa will forever honor the founding fathers who ensured that the African Union flag flies alongside the Namibian flag."
Uerikua also emphasized that Nujoma would be remembered for establishing the country's maize triangle, located between Otavi, Grootfontein, and Tsumeb.
Former PLAN combatants' Regional Coordinator Bartholomeus Shangheta reflected on the formation of the PLAN fighters during the guerrilla war.
"Comrade Nujoma's unwavering commitment, resilience, and hope provided the foundation for many to join the liberation struggle, uniting in the face of oppression and the horrors of apartheid. He stood for the Namibian people and played a critical role in founding PLAN, igniting the guerrilla war against the oppressive white regime."
Swapo Party Regional Coordinator Imms Namaseb remarked that Nujoma understood that fighting for freedom was not just a political struggle but a moral imperative.
"Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma believed in fairness and equality. All he ever wanted was a Namibia where everyone, regardless of race, color, or background, could live together in peace and harmony and share in the country’s wealth. Today, as we say goodbye to Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, we must remember the lessons he taught us. He showed us the importance of courage, hard work, and never giving up, no matter the challenges."
