The community of Tsumkwe celebrated the official launch of a local cleaning campaign. The project, run under the theme of "Our Trash, Our Responsibility, Let's Keep Tsumkwe Clean", is funded by the US-based NGO Palms for Life.
The aim behind the cleanup campaign is to clean up the settlement and tackle local challenges—from waste disposal to pollution and neglect—by bringing together community members, local businesses, and institutions in this vital effort.
At the launch event, project coordinator Paulus Ndara briefly explained the background to the initiative.
"This initiative represents our commitment to maintaining the cleanliness of our settlement and reflects our dedication to fostering a healthier, more sustainable environment for all residents. As a community, we acknowledge our responsibility to protect our surroundings and enhance the quality of life for ourselves and future generations. The Tsumkwe settlement is a vibrant tapestry of cultures and traditions that we have built together, deserving of our care and respect."
He added that a series of activities and programmes will be conducted to educate and engage residents of all ages on the importance of cleanliness and environmental stewardship.
These, he said, would include workshops and other outreach efforts.
The campaign is expected to run until March 2026, although it may be extended, the organisers say, depending on its success.
