Workers at the Seawork Fishing company in Walvis Bay staged a demonstration opposing management’s attempt to scrap their 10:00 tea break and link wage increases to its removal.
The employees argued that the break is essential for health, safety, and medication needs, especially considering the heavy and cold conditions in the factory. They rejected management’s proposal of a 7.85% wage increase only if the tea break is removed, or 6% if it is retained.
Instead, the workers are demanding a 7.5% wage increase without conditions, stating that their salaries are already low compared to those of others in the group. They urged management to resolve the matter fairly and prioritise both production and employee wellness.
