NUDO MP, Vetaruhe Kandorozu, raised concerns about deteriorating service infrastructure in rural areas.
He said that while some towns have reported weather affecting electricity, this doesn't seem to be the case in more developed areas.
Kandorozu questioned the Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Natangue Ithete, why there are disparities in certain areas regarding service delivery, particularly the provision of electricity.
"Some infrastructure can surpass wind and rain; some of it goes off. And when electricity goes off, telecommunication goes off, water supply goes off, sanitation, everything. And for the rats or any other non-power to come and restore, it takes up to two days for them to come or to give electricity. My question to you is, why is there such a disparity in terms of infrastructure when it comes to electricity in different towns and localities?"
The minister acknowledged there is a lot that needs to be done in terms of improving infrastructure.
Ithete added that during colonial times, the oppressors built the infrastructure in more developed areas, which was much better than that of marginalised and rural areas.
"Of course, we need to strengthen those infrastructures, and we are. That is what caused the infrastructure in towns such as Swakopmund and other towns that we have mentioned. The reason why they are not affected is on that basis. Even the radios – when you go into the rural area, you open the radio, and you will struggle to find them, but in towns, the infrastructures were made in such a way that they benefited white communities."
He further urged fellow MPs not to shy away from reaching out to the ministry and sharing their suggestions, as well as supporting the ministry in coming up with solutions to improve service infrastructure for all Namibians.
