President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has conveyed her sympathies to the citizens and the government of Botswana, along with the grieving family, regarding the death of the former Ambassador of Botswana to the United Nations, Legwaila Joseph Legwaila.

In a media statement, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the late Legwaila stood with Namibia not as an outsider, but as an African devoted to the cause of freedom and human dignity.

The president said Legwaila will forever be remembered for the pivotal role he played in Namibia's journey to independence, adding that it was an act of brotherhood and solidarity.

She described him as a towering diplomat and a son of Africa, reflecting deep bonds of friendship and cooperation that anchored the liberation movements of the region.

Legwaila had close friendships with the late President Hage Geingob and the founding Minister of Foreign Affairs, Theo-Ben Gurirab.

The 88-year-old Legwaila died on Saturday in Gaborone.

He leaves behind a wife and three children.
