The Namibia National Women's Shutdown organised a nationwide silent lie-down to honour those who lost their lives to gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

The group is a sister to a South African group advocating for the same in South Africa.

The organisers say that the 15-minute time reference represents the daily murder rate for approximately 15 females in that country.

Meanwhile, according to Namibian Police statistics, between April 2024 and February 2025, Namibia recorded 4,405 cases of gender-based violence, with 1,345 of those being rape cases, bringing the statistics to about 13 cases daily.

The call to action comes just days before Namibia heads into the regional council and local authority elections.

Beata Aiyambo is an advocate for the cause. She read the speech on behalf of the movement.

Student leader and advocate Victorino Sikerete called on men to use their strength to protect and uplift women rather than inflicting harm on them.
