Oshana Governor Hofni Iipinge says his office remains committed to ensuring that senior citizens receive quality services and social support.
The Governor made these remarks in a message delivered on his behalf during the senior citizens' year-end thanksgiving organised by the Namibia Senior Citizens Association at Oshakati.
The governor's speech was delivered on his behalf by the Oshakati West Councillor Ndilimeke Iikela.
Iikela affirmed the office's collaboration with public and private sectors to consolidate essential services and support for the elderly.
The regional leadership will also push for better access to health care, particularly for chronic cases, as well as the integration of senior citizens into community activities.
He noted that a society is judged by how it treats its elderly and said the Oshana Region will always strive to lead by example.
"Today is not just a celebration; it is an act of gratitude, gratitude for your wisdom, your sacrifices, your patriotism and the immense foundation you have laid for present and future generations. Our senior citizens represent the living archive of your history and our moral compass as a nation."
Oshakati Town Council Mayor Leonard Hango says the gathering is a reminder of the important role senior citizens continue to play in society.
His speech was delivered on his behalf. "Today we celebrate you, our senior citizens, the custodians of wisdom, values, culture and history. Your lives and experiences have laid the foundation upon which our families, communities, towns and nation continue to grow."
Senior citizens of Oshana expressed appreciation for the year-end get-together.
However, they want a pensioners' home built in Oshakati, as well as drought relief food to be distributed to all the elderly.
Elders also want shades and ablution facilities at pay points.
